Counseling Specialties
Counseling programs prepare students for a specialty — clinical mental health, school, addiction, rehabilitation and others. A specialty belongs to a program, not to a whole school: a university can hold an accredited school counseling program and an unaccredited addiction program. Counts below are verified programs whose own official title or description names the specialty; a program can name more than one.
Clinical Mental Health Counseling
87 programsClinical mental health counseling (CMHC) programs prepare counselors to work with individuals, couples, families and groups in community agencies, private practice, hospitals and treatment settings. They are the usual route toward professional counselor licensure (LPC, LMHC, LPCC, LCPC or a similar state title), which also requires post-degree supervised experience and an examination.
