Master's in Counseling Admission Requirements: What Programs Actually Ask For
What counseling master's programs ask applicants for: degree, GPA rules, prerequisite courses, interviews, background checks and GRE policies, with examples from official pages.
Updated October 12, 2026 · CounselingSchools.net editorial team
Admission to a counseling master's program is not a single standard. Each program sets its own rules, and two programs at similar universities can differ on GPA cutoffs, prerequisite courses, test scores and interviews. What they share is a goal: counseling programs are choosing people who will sit with clients during practicum and internship within a year or two, so most look beyond grades. This guide walks through the common requirements, using examples from programs' own official pages, so you know what to look for on each program's admissions page.
What nearly every program asks for
The baseline is a completed bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Some programs add details: Utah Valley University's clinical mental health program says the degree must be a minimum of 120 credit hours. Beyond the degree, the usual application file includes:
- official transcripts from every college attended
- a personal statement or essay about your interest in counseling
- letters of recommendation (Wake Forest's graduate school, for example, asks for three, with two academic sources preferred)
- a resume or CV
For programs accredited by CACREP, the 2024 Standards set out what admission decisions must weigh. Entry-level admission recommendations are made by the counselor education program and must consider each applicant's career goals, aptitude for graduate-level study consistent with the program's delivery type, and potential success in forming effective counseling relationships with diverse populations. The Standards also require the institution's published materials to describe the program's admission criteria, so the official page is the place to read the actual rules.
GPA: minimums, ranges and second chances
GPA rules vary more than most applicants expect, both in the number and in how it is calculated:
- Firm floors. Cal State Fullerton lists a minimum 3.0 GPA for the undergraduate degree. Montclair State states that applicants with a GPA below 2.9 will not be considered.
- Recent coursework. Bradley University uses a last-60-hour undergraduate GPA of 3.0 for unconditional admission, with conditional admission possible at a 2.75 cumulative GPA.
- Flexible minimums. Central Michigan University lists a 2.8 minimum but says applicants below it are still encouraged to apply and will receive consideration. Bellevue University asks for 3.0 in the most recent 60 credit hours and lets applicants below that appeal for program director review.
- Explain the record. UNC Greensboro asks applicants with an undergraduate GPA of 2.75 or below to submit a statement that puts their earlier academic performance in context.
If your GPA is below a program's stated number, look for wording such as "conditional," "probationary," "appeal" or "petition" before ruling it out, and ask the admissions office directly.
Prerequisite courses and related experience
Most counseling master's programs do not require a specific undergraduate major, but some require particular courses. Utah Valley University lists Abnormal Psychology, Research Methods and Statistics, and says prerequisites still in progress are fine at the application stage. Bellevue University asks for six credit hours in behavioral sciences such as psychology, sociology, anthropology or social work. If you are coming from an unrelated field, our guide on studying counseling without a psychology degree covers this in more detail.
School counseling programs sometimes ask for experience with young people. Seattle University's school counseling MAEd requires at least one year of experience related to schools or school-aged youth and prefers three.
Interviews, group activities and writing samples
Interviews are common. In our directory (October 2026), 120 of 198 master's programs list an interview as part of admission (how we count). Formats differ:
- Central Michigan University describes a one-hour virtual group interview that involves responding to questions, reading an article and taking part in a non-facilitated group discussion.
- George Fox University holds group interviews by invitation, either in person at its Portland Center or over Zoom.
- Wake Forest requires applicants under consideration to take part in a recorded personal interview.
- Cal State Fullerton offers faculty interviews by invitation only to selected candidates.
Group formats are designed to show how you listen and respond to others, not only what you say about yourself. Some programs also add a writing sample or a short video; read the instructions carefully, since length limits and prompts are usually specific.
Background checks
Many programs run a criminal background check at some point, often after an offer. Wake Forest makes a successful criminal background check a condition of acceptance. South Dakota State University requires applicants who complete the interview to complete and pay for a state and federal background check.
The reason reaches past graduate school. Practicum and internship sites serve clients, and state licensure has its own screening. CACREP notes that graduating from an accredited program does not guarantee a license and that licensure usually has other requirements, such as a counseling exam, a background check and a jurisprudence exam. In Texas, for example, applicants for the LPC Associate license receive fingerprinting instructions after applying. If you have a criminal record, ask both the program and the licensing board in the state where you plan to practice how it is reviewed before you invest in a degree. This is general information, not legal advice.
GRE policies
Most counseling master's programs no longer require the GRE, but "no requirement" is not the same as "no information." Here is how the 198 master's programs in our directory (October 2026) are recorded:
| GRE policy on the official page | Programs |
|---|---|
| Not required | 94 |
| Optional | 20 |
| Waived (temporarily or conditionally) | 6 |
| Required | 3 |
| Not published | 75 |
"Not published" means we could not find a policy on the official pages, not that the test is waived. Conditional rules are also common. Ohio University says applicants with a GPA below 2.9 may still apply but must submit GRE Verbal and Quantitative scores. Indiana Wesleyan University requires the GRE only for applicants with a cumulative undergraduate GPA below 3.0. In the other direction, Cal State Fullerton says it will not ask for GRE scores and applicants cannot submit them. ETS describes the GRE General Test as having three sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing. Our no-GRE master's list only includes programs whose official page says the test is not required.
A short admissions checklist
Before you apply, confirm on each program's official pages:
- The GPA rule, how it is calculated (cumulative, last 60 hours, upper division) and whether conditional admission exists.
- Any prerequisite courses and whether they can be completed after admission.
- The interview format and whether it is in person, virtual or recorded.
- When a background check happens and who pays for it.
- The GRE policy as written, including GPA-based exceptions.
- Location rules for online study. Palo Alto University, for instance, says online applicants must be located in a state where it is authorized to provide online education.
Admission requirements change from cycle to cycle, and meeting every listed minimum does not guarantee an offer. Treat the program's current admissions page, and a conversation with its admissions staff, as the final word. For deadlines and application planning, see our admissions hub.
