Rankings Methodology
Version 1.0. How our “Best” selections are made, what evidence they use, and what they do not use.
Last updated 12 October 2026
Our “Best” and “Top” lists are researched editorial selections, not official academic rankings. A program is selected when verified facts from its own official pages and the CACREP directory satisfy every required criterion for that list. Selections are shown alphabetically and are not numbered: we do not hold comparable outcome data that would justify ordering one program above another.
Every entry shows why it was included — the evidence that satisfied each criterion — together with strengths, tradeoffs and the kind of applicant its published features suit, and the date we reviewed it. Each fact links to its source.
We do not use acceptance rates, completion or job-placement rates, licensure-exam pass rates, salaries, satisfaction scores, reputation surveys or institutional rankings. Programs publish outcome figures for different periods, cohorts and examinations; comparing them without matching those would mislead, so we do not. Institutional prestige is not evidence of counseling program quality.
Completeness is not a proxy for quality. Criteria ask for evidence of specific features — CACREP accreditation matched to the program, a stated professional purpose, documented practicum and internship, a stated campus-attendance model for online programs, published tuition — not for how many fields a profile contains. When evidence is missing, a program is not selected; that does not mean it is weaker.
We have not attended, visited or interviewed these programs. Selections are desk research from official sources.
Sponsorship and advertising never influence inclusion, order or assessment. Paid placements are displayed separately and labelled “Sponsored”, and the selection code does not read sponsorship data. Nobody can pay for an accreditation label, a verification status or a place on a list.
Applicant-fit labels (for working adults, for students who must stay in their home state, for applicants aiming at school counseling…) are used only when official wording supports them, such as a stated part-time option or a statement that no campus visits are required.
If numerical rankings are introduced later, we will publish the criteria, weights, data period, missing-data treatment, the universe considered, every score breakdown and a new methodology version before any number appears.
Criteria
| Criterion | What counts as evidence |
|---|---|
| Relevant programmatic accreditation | A current CACREP accreditation listed in the official CACREP directory for this program's own specialty and degree. Accreditation of another program at the same school does not count; “in process” does not count. |
| Specialty curriculum | The program's official title or description names its counseling specialty, and its required credits (or documented curriculum) are published. |
| Stated professional purpose | The school states what the program prepares for — professional counselor licensure, school counselor certification or counselor education — in its own words. |
| Published fieldwork arrangements | Practicum and internship requirements are documented on an official page (ideally with clock hours). |
| Placement arrangements or assistance | The program publishes who arranges practicum/internship sites, or a placement assistance service (required for online lists, where students usually train near home). |
| Clear campus-attendance requirements (online lists) | For online programs: the school either states that no campus attendance is required for coursework, or documents each required residency, intensive or campus visit. |
| Tuition transparency | Tuition is published on an official page with its basis (per credit, per term, per year or whole program); an academic year is shown when the school prints one. |
| Admissions clarity | At least two admission requirements are published (for example prior degree, GPA, prerequisites, interview, references), or the GRE policy plus one further requirement. |
| Published funding or student support | Scholarships, assistantships, fellowships or a funding policy are documented on an official page. Required for doctoral lists; recorded when present elsewhere. |
| Licensure disclosure | The program or school publishes a professional licensure or certification disclosure (recorded when present; not required, since many schools publish it outside the program page). |
| Source quality and freshness | Eligibility evidence and the facts above come from the school's own pages (and the CACREP directory) and were verified within the last 12 months. |
Faculty and research information is not used as a criterion in version 1.0: comparable, sourced faculty data is not available for most programs, and counting names on a page would reward page length rather than quality. Program-specific outcomes (licensure-exam pass rates, completion and job-placement rates) are not used because they are not published on a comparable basis across programs.
The selections and their required criteria
| Selection | Eligible degrees | Required criteria | Minimum |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best Counseling Schools in the USA | Schools with at least two verified counselor-preparation programs in this directory. Counseling psychology programs do not count toward a school's inclusion. | At least two verified counseling programs, at least one CACREP-accredited, at least one selected in our program lists | 5 |
| Best Master's in Counseling Programs | Master's degrees whose official program is counselor preparation in a named specialty (MA, MS, MEd and equivalents are treated as one degree level). Counseling psychology and standalone MFT degrees are not eligible. | Relevant programmatic accreditation; Specialty curriculum; Stated professional purpose; Published fieldwork arrangements; Tuition transparency; Admissions clarity; Source quality and freshness | 8 |
| Best Online Counseling Schools and Programs | Master's and doctoral counselor-preparation programs whose verified delivery is online. Hybrid programs with regular in-person classes are not eligible for this list. | Relevant programmatic accreditation; Clear campus-attendance requirements (online lists); Published fieldwork arrangements; Placement arrangements or assistance; Stated professional purpose; Tuition transparency; Source quality and freshness | 5 |
| Best Clinical Mental Health Counseling Programs | Master's programs whose official title or description names clinical mental health counseling and whose stated purpose is clinical counselor preparation. | Relevant programmatic accreditation; Specialty curriculum; Stated professional purpose; Published fieldwork arrangements; Tuition transparency; Admissions clarity; Source quality and freshness | 5 |
| Best School Counseling Programs | Master's programs whose official title or description names school counseling and whose stated purpose is school counselor preparation. | Relevant programmatic accreditation; Specialty curriculum; Stated professional purpose; Published fieldwork arrangements; Tuition transparency; Admissions clarity; Source quality and freshness | 5 |
| Best Doctoral Programs in Counselor Education and Supervision | Doctoral programs whose official title or description names counselor education and supervision. PhD and EdD are labelled separately on each entry. | Relevant programmatic accreditation; Specialty curriculum; Admissions clarity; Published funding or student support; Source quality and freshness | 3 |
A selection with fewer qualifying entries than its minimum is not published.
Strengths, limitations and applicant fit
Each entry lists strengths and limitations derived from the same verified facts — for example a stated part-time option, a published estimated total tuition, required campus residencies, published placement assistance, or a licensure disclosure that is missing. Applicant-fit labels are used only when official wording supports them:
- For working adults — a stated part-time option, or an asynchronous online schedule.
- For students who need to stay where they live — verified online coursework (practicum and internship still happen in person, usually locally).
- For students who want help finding fieldwork sites — published placement assistance.
- For future PK–12 school counselors and for applicants aiming at professional counselor licensure — the program's own stated professional purpose. This describes what the program says it prepares for; it is not a licensure determination.
- For future counselor educators, supervisors and researchers — doctoral programs in counselor education and supervision.
We do not name a universal “best overall” program: the available evidence does not support one.
Data period, universe and missing data
Data period: Facts verified on official pages and the CACREP directory in October 2026, and on the review date shown on each list.
Universe: Published, eligible programs in our directory at review time (see /methodology/ for eligibility). Coverage is partial and growing; a program missing from the directory cannot be selected.
Missing data: Unverified facts count as missing. A required criterion with missing evidence means the program is not selected; optional criteria are recorded when present. Missing evidence never counts in a program's favor and is never treated as a negative fact.
Sponsorship
The selection code does not read advertising data. Sponsored placements are labelled, displayed outside the lists, and cannot buy inclusion, order, description or verified status. See the sponsorship disclosure.
